URBAN PALETTE

Reflecting on studying in Japan last year, I have looked at the vibrancy of the cityscapes to inform this collection. This is what initially created interest in exploring this subject to draw. This project explores Japanese construction sites, taking inspiration from the geometric compositions and bright colours to translate through my large scale drawings. My collection includes textiles for sculptural fashion silhouettes that explore the print and pattern found in an urban setting, focusing on zingy colours against muted backgrounds. Furthermore in Japan I learned traditional Japanese natural dye methods that I am applying to my project. The natural dyes are used to represent neutral manmade urban settings. The resulting textiles celebrate composition and space on the body, using bold mark making that is juxtaposed with intricate details of embroidery. The collection is driven wholly by colour and material and celebrates textile print with a bold and brave dynamic. It seeks to present scale, drawn artwork and energetic mark making.
